The Grote Markt in Aalst is being redeveloped. From the start of the works, the City of Aalst wants to show residents what the square will look like: on its website and social media, on site through QR codes in the shops around the square, and in VR.
Toster built a 3D environment of the future Grote Markt from the plans and 3D files of design office OMGEVING, using photos of the real facades as textures. That single environment feeds everything: a 360-degree web experience with 25 positions - each with its own QR code - a video for web and social media, and a VR experience on Meta Quest 3.
The VR experience starts centuries ago, with an early 17th-century pen drawing by Aalst clerk Romaan De Visschere - the view from the Zoutstraat, and the inspiration for the new design. Then you walk past stops on the square of tomorrow: the belfry in the leading role, a square bench as a meeting place, a new spot for the statue of Dirk Martens, more trees and greenery, and comfortable paving with clear walking lines.
