In the prop gallery of C-mine Expedition - a dark, narrow passage reminiscent of the mine tunnels - you discover the surface from underground: through a VR viewer you suddenly stand on top of the 60-metre headframe.
Toster designed and built three VR viewers on Meta Quest 3. The headset hangs from a sturdy flexible hose, inspired by the flexible hoses used in the mine. Bring it to your face and the experience starts by itself. You choose your language by looking at it, and you move around just by looking - no buttons.
From the headframe, a narrator points out landmarks in the landscape, such as the Winterslag and Waterschei slag heaps, with spatial sound and small animations: a turning windmill, the bells of a church tower, birds. There is a short and a long version, in Dutch and English.
The viewers are mounted on height-adjustable lifting columns, designed with engineering firm Vansichen Linear Technology, so children, adults and wheelchair users all experience it at their own eye level. The experience was delivered on temporary poles; the lifting columns follow.
